Abstract: Project management is an art and practice one cannot learn from the book. Who has not felt frustrated or irritated during a project, shouted or sighed: ‘What a mess!’, ‘how is this possible?’ In those situations the book does not tell you what to do: you are out there on your own. To handle the situation every project manager carries a virtual back pack filled with knowledge and skills, and also values, assumptions and a personality. This means that the project manager as a person is involved in running the project, hence the feelings and emotions. Learning about project management includes also learning about oneself, it is a package deal. Peer coaching is a sound method to straighten out personal contradictions, to discover how one creates ones own pitfalls. The source of learning is the daily practice, specially tough situations. The unpleasant emotion is the sign that a border is crossed: a value or an important assumption. The peers in the team help one another to resist the urge for a quick solution and to stick to the uncomfortable feeling. This way they explore the border and discover underlying hidden assumptions. A valuable learning experience for all team members.
Session outline The focus of the session is on interaction, more specific on talking and exploring situations from daily practice. We will work with one or two cases brought in by the participants. During the session the participants will use a well structured method to explore the ‘question behind the question’ and the recurring patterns that shape the problems. These lead the way to the hidden assumptions and values. The program runs like this: * Introductions: setting the theme * Presentation: exploring peer coaching: * Group work: Experiencing peer coaching * Discussion: facilitation of peer coaching * Recap: lessons learned
The time allocated to 15 % delivery (presentations), 45 % activity (small group work, peer coaching), 25% interaction (group discussion), 15% Clarification, proceedings and miscellaneous.
